Ciao!
My partner and I are Canadian trail runners and will be in Italy in mid-February into March. We are looking for recommendations about where in Italy would be nice to stay to enjoy trail running during that time of year (and won't be too technical/snowy/icy). Would love any suggestions and any trail running friends while we're there!
Grazie!
Ari

Hi Ari,
February and March in Italy can be warm months (early spring) but also colder months (back end of the winter). So far this year the weather has been quite mild but a snow storm could quite easily happen right through until April.
Of course the Alps are covered with snow so unless you want to do snow running those areas are not very good.
Good places would be on the coast. For example Liguria. You can run on coastal trails or head up into the hills just behind.
Tuscany is also a good place and anywhere from Florence in the east of Tuscany to Lucca and Pisa in the west of Tuscany has easy access to the south facing Appennine mountains. They go up to nearly 2000m but since they face south any snow melts quite rapidly unless there is an exceptional snowfall.
Also further south in Tuscany in the Chianti area is good for trail running but there is less elevation and very little technical terrain.
At this moment even the north facing Appennine mountains are in good condition because most of the snow has melted away but that could change rapidly if a bad weather front with snow moves in. That is the area between Bologna (east appennines) and then moving north westwards towards Modena, Reggio Emilia, Parma and Piacenza.
I’ll let you have my e-mail if you need some more info.
